Hit the Reset Button

Daddy said work hard Put a little away Pay off what you borrow You’ll be fine someday So we bought their houses We borrowed their cash Worked our whole lives And handed it back They owned the paper They owned the loan We paid for the house They still owned the throne Then somebody asked— Where’d all the money go? Money bought access Access wrote the rules Rules bought ownership Ownership bought you Power made money Money bought more Round went the circle Behind every door We weren’t supposed to see it We weren’t supposed to know Now everybody sees it— Hit the reset button Before the whole thing blows They bought the buildings They bought the ground Bought up the businesses All over town A loophole here A bailout there One set of rules For the people upstairs Every time we caught up They moved the line Called their fortune freedom Called our debt a crime Then we followed the money And there it was The circle wasn’t broken It did what it does Money bought access Access wrote the rules Rules bought ownership Ownership bought you Power made money Money bought more Round went the circle Behind every door We weren’t supposed to see it We weren’t supposed to know Now everybody sees it— Hit the reset button Before the whole thing blows We saw the doors We saw the names We saw who owned The goddamn game And once you see the circle You can’t unsee it again So change the rules Change the money Start it over again Money bought access Access wrote the rules Rules bought ownership Ownership bought you Power made money Money bought more Round went the circle Till we found the door We weren’t supposed to see it We weren’t supposed to know But everybody sees it now— Hit the reset button Before we take control Round and round Till somebody knows Reset.
