Where Did the Time Go?
WHERE DID THE TIME GO?
When I was seven, ten minutes took forever
Christmas was a lifetime down the road
Summer took its time getting here
And every mile was somewhere I had never gone
I watched that clock above the classroom
Swore the hands were standing still
Couldn’t wait to get a little older
Couldn’t wait until
Funny what you wish for
When you think you’ve got forever
Where did the time go?
I swear it used to crawl
Now the days run into weeks
And I barely see them fall
I spent my whole damn childhood
Waiting for my life to start
Now I’d give anything
To make one hour last
Where did the time go?
At twenty, summers still had names
At thirty, years began to blur
Forty came while I was working
Fifty showed up without a word
Then somebody said, “Remember when?”
And I said, “That wasn’t long ago”
They laughed and said, “That’s twenty years”
Jesus Christ—where did it go?
Where did the time go?
I swear it used to crawl
Now the days run into weeks
And I barely see them fall
I spent my whole damn childhood
Waiting for my life to start
Now I’d give anything
To make one hour last
Where did the time go?
Maybe time never changed at all
Maybe I’m the one who did
Maybe life was moving just as fast
When I was still a kid
But everything was new back then
Every road, every face, every door
Now the things I’ve seen a thousand times
Don’t leave footprints anymore
So take the long way home tonight
Call somebody you still love
Go somewhere you’ve never been
Look around and look enough
’Cause someday this day you’re wasting
Will be one you’d pay to know
And you’ll close your eyes for just a minute—
And ten years will go.
Where did the time go?
Now I finally understand
Seven years old, begging that old clock
To move its goddamn hands
Now I’m asking those same hands
For just a little more
Funny how forever
Gets shorter than before
Where did the time go?
When I was seven
Ten minutes took forever
Now forever
Ain’t long enough.
